“Parasocial relationships should be a must” Vtuber Chung_iro’s tips and tricks for Fancim M

“Chung_iro’s fan communication ‘sauce’ from his pre-debut days”

If you're a content creator with fans, you might have wondered how to foster deeper relationships without crossing boundaries. However, maintaining immersion is crucial to a certain extent, especially if you're a VTuber. The challenge for virtual streamers is preventing toxic parasocial relationships while maintaining healthy community connections.
Chung_iro felt the same issues but with Fancim M, he was able to stay in character and cultivate an even deeper relationship with his fanbase. In this post, we learn about how he was able to do this even before his official debut.

“I wanted to be a full-time Vtuber”

Q: Hey there, let's start with an introduction.

Hey! I'm Chung_iro, a virtual YouTuber. I create various types of content on streaming platforms, mainly focused on interactive communication.

Q: What got you into streaming?

Originally, I had no idea about internet broadcasting at all. But I met people through other platforms who were talking about their streaming experiences, and that naturally made me curious. So I started watching a few streamers regularly, and then I thought "Maybe I should try this too" and just jumped in without much preparation. And it was fun! That's when I decided I should properly prepare and give it a real shot.
I started using the name "Chung_iro" in May 2023, but it wasn't my current character that people know today. It was kind of like a test—"Is this something I can actually do?" I tried streaming with that mindset. Then from July, I started preparing my current character, and I officially debuted in October.

"The chat format helps me build solid relationships with fans"

Q: I know you've been using Fancim M well even before your debut. Did you have a specific plan for fan communication?

Not really a specific plan, I started pretty casually just because I wanted to try it. I don't remember exactly how I discovered Fancim M, but I saw other VTubers using it and decided to give it a shot.

When I tried it, I could see all the fans' messages in my chat window, but fans could only see my messages. Those kinds of features seemed like they'd be good for building relationships with fans. Plus, it's like getting to use something similar to "Bubble" for free, so it's really accessible for fans.
Note: Bubble is a social messaging service where K-pop idols can communicate with fans through 1:1 chat-like interactions while appearing in a managed group chat for idols.

Q: Besides Fancim M, have you tried other services for fan communication?

When I started streaming in May 2023, I tried using a fan Discord server, but managing it was a bit difficult, so I'm not using it anymore. On Discord, you can see profiles, usernames, and everything. So fans started forming friendships with each other. While that's inevitable to some extent, I'd prefer it doesn't get too deep. When fan relationships become excessive, it seems to muddy the flow of the broadcast. In that sense, Fancim M's strong anonymity is really good.

"Character building and relationship strengthening—the core is fan communication"

Q: How do you use Fancim M to build relationships with fans? Do fans like the one-on-one format of Fancim M?

When I personally reply to messages like birthday wishes, fans really love it. But while one-on-one communication is good in some ways, I think it could potentially lead to more of a friendship dynamic rather than a streamer-fan relationship if I'm not careful, so I don't use it too often.
I use the "public sharing" feature a lot, so fans tell me it feels more like talking together in a group chat rather than one-on-one conversations. I publicly share messages from fans that could be good conversation starters, then we all talk about that together, and when funny replies come in, I share those publicly too. That's how I use the platform.

Q: What kind of content gets the best reaction from your fans on Fancim M?

When content comes up where fans and I might have different opinions, everyone starts arguing about who's right and the chat becomes really active. Like really everyday, trivial debate topics. For example, I eat pork cutlet a lot, so someone posted "Chung_iro - pork cutlet = corpse." I said that wasn't true, fans said it was, and we talked about it for ages.
So I think it would really help new creators to throw out one topic per day for the first week or two on Fancim M. I was a special case where I got more attention than expected initially and had lots of people join Fancim M early on, but that won't be true for everyone. In those cases, having topics would help keep conversations going.

Q: You seem to put a lot of effort into communicating with fans. What are your insights on building relationships with your fans?

I've heard a lot that communication is the most important thing in the relationship between streamers and fans. So I check Fancim M whenever I have time, but it feels more like I'm doing it because I enjoy it and like it, rather than intentionally. I just say what I want to say, and if messages come in, I reply.
But fan communication really is important. It's especially crucial for virtual YouTubers. Since viewers recognize me through the character I show them, I think communicating regularly helps maintain that character consistency.
And communication is the foundation for naturally building relationships with fans. Long-time broadcasters get to watch fans who started watching as students become adults and even get married. Fans really love hearing about little things like "what I did today" or "what I wore today." I think by consistently sharing these small, everyday stories, you can maintain good long-term relationships with fans.

"I want to use Fancim M as a tool for building character narrative too"

Q: What are your plans for 2025?

I've been planning this for a while, but I'm preparing a narrative background for my character. A lot of people who like 2D content are also interested in VTubers, and those fans love storylines. So I think I can develop this content into videos and also drop hints through my communications with fans on Fancim M.
Also, there's been a lot of talk about making merch, so I'm preparing that too. I'm planning to prepare shorts content and cover songs that tie in with the merch and present them as a package.
